Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 3
February 14: Susie Park Plays Ortiz

Prokofiev's dramatic Third Symphony (1928) salvages musical material from his opera "The Fiery Angel," which remained unstaged during his lifetime despite the composer's high regard for its music. Written in Paris after a friend suggested repurposing the opera's score, the symphony retains the dark, intense character of its source but functions as a purely instrumental work without narrative intent. Cast in four contrasting movements—from the noisy, energetic opening to the epic finale—this rarely performed work demonstrates Prokofiev's brilliant orchestration and emotional range, with the composer himself considering it "one of my most significant compositions."
Conductor Paolo Bortolameolli led the Minnesota Orchestra in this performance on February 14, 2025.
